I would be interested in hearing from anyone who does this and what arrangements they make with others.

I have some topics on a new niche that are semi YMYL and just generally would be good to be answered by an expert to help with trust of the site. Since the site is new I don't have anything to offer in terms of traffic or other SEO metrics to make it worthwhile to write on it, so paying for the odd expert to write seems like the next best thing.

Not at the moment, but this something I'm considering for a new project.

Launching this new project I'm really conscious about building huge amounts of trust etc. even in non YMYL. The sites in the real estate space and I want to get roundups etc. from interior designers etc. the more experts the better. SEO isn't the main focus of it though, purely from a brand perspective.

It might be simpler to just ask some of the authority experts in the niche to be interviewed for your site. Try to get some free authority content if you have no money, and if you do have some, hold it in reserve in case the expert demands some payment. Research what BIG questions about the field you want the expert(s) to answer. The big names and the hard to find info they provide together could be enough to generate your own traffic, authority, and authority backlinks from other people searching for top notch material in the niche.

Yep, this is good first step. Might get lucky with free content which would be ideal. I'm thinking a lot of my queries could make good interviews/roundups so a short paragraph and link could be worthwhile enough.
