Don't focus on quantity, focus on quality e.g. high domain rating, clean backlink profile and different anchor text.
BHW has tons of good resources about backlinks.

Depends what kind of links are you getting, the way you are getting links are related to what your site is offering.

If these are profile links I don't suggest you to take backlinks.If they are coming from .edu blog then they will be high authority backlinks.

If the link is from authorized institute site or guest post on reputed site, then it has much worth to use. Most other .edu link can be easily manipulated and spammed. It doesn't have any value.
