if not for equity than for diversity sake
one thing to keep in mind is if its a bunch of subdomains
it isnt as strong
so world.sci.comm.harvard.edu is weaker than harvard.edu/blog

Some are better than others, but keep a natural link profile and you won't go far wrong. This includes a mix of different types of links.
