EDU Backlinks for Porn?

I've got an opportunity in front of me to grab many EDU backlinks for an adult site.

Is this advisable these days?

A few years ago I had a porn blog and tossed a few hundred EDU links its way and in about a year I was the #1 rank for an extremely competitive keyword.

Does this method still work for adult sites or have search engines gotten smarter?

I've had a lot of interest from adult sites asking for backlinks on my collection of EDU sites so it seems at least SEO's out there are interested in this method. I didn't sell them the backlinks, of course, it's too risky - not unless they're willing to pay double the price, which they're not.
