can someone help

i am trying to install a blog on a hosted domain but when i try to make changes to the permalink structure for example i get a message saying to update the .htaccess file as it is not writeable

i have tried to change the file permissions without luck and even contact the help desk of the hosting company, they are worse than useless

hopefully someone can point me in the right direction

thanks in advance

william

what version of wp are you installing? is this a manual install or do you have the ability to install via fantastico?

lildog

wordpress version 2.3.3

install with fantastico

try to upload a file with name htaccess.txt and after uploading try to rename it with .htaccess

make a file on your server called .htaccess, then if you hit update permalink structure scroll to the bottom of the screen, you will see a code and a mesage that goed "if this file was writeable yadayada".

Copy that code, past it in the .htaccess and done.

tried your idea karum with no luck

frisky
have tried what you suggest but did not make any difference
with all the fucking about i think i have screwed the .htaccess file as it is empty apart from the code from the permalink page

hope someone can help

william

It can be empty, or at least, it could only contain the text you copy/pasted.
After doing the copy/paste what error does it give you?

i dont get an error i just get message to update the .htaccess file
what file permission should this file have ?
i have tried all different combinations

When you get the message to update the htaccess file you scroll down in wordpress. There you will find the code you have to manually copy/paste in the file on your server. Make sure its called ".htaccess". When your done with that go back to your wordpress, push the update structure again (to make sure i guess). You did mark the structure you like right? The "%year%title%" thing before you update?

If you cant get it done im willing to take a live look at it, just let me know!

still not having any luck
when i try to update the permalink structure
with the default settings the changes ok

which is very annoying
will pm you frisky with the details if you could take a look i would really appreciate it as am starting to really get totally pissed of with the whole thing
i thought installing a blog on your own domain was supposed to be easy boy was i wrong

Hey bill,
well installing wordpress is one of the easiest things to do, but it seems your having some bad luck or miss something somewhere but i'll be happy to help you out just let me know or ad me to msn: [email protected]

Any other messenger is ok too, but that one is where im online the most.

If it's really being that big of a headache, export your database from the blog to a SQL file. Delete the blog, reinstall it via FTP and NOT fantastico, and change the write permissions on your theme's files to modify however you like.

finally got the blog sorted

thanks for all your help guys
keep up the good work

the problem was that the .htaccess file was not in the same folder
as the blog
