Can someone give me a quick run down on the quickest way to Ecommerce success. I have a direct relationship with many manufacturers in my niche and I am needing to create an Ecommerce based website. I'd like this to be solely Web Based even though i may eventually have a local shop or expand upon this.

I would like:

1. Summary of what it takes
2. References to learn more without reading 3,000 pages. I'm not against reading a good book if it really takes care of business.
3. what i will need?
ie: paypal account or paypal business account , subscribe to authorize.net, an appropriate theme or template site that looks good and is respectable,etc...

Thanks so much everyone. I really appreciate it.

Have a high-quality web site is my #1 rule. Its like if you open a brick and mortar store... if it looks shabby or no better than everybody else's it won't be as good as if it is REALLY special or unique.

People like to try to buy a domain, buy template or some cheap $900 web design job, slap Magento on it and call it good. If it were that cheap or that easy don't you think EVERYONE would do it??? You have to make sure you are committed before you start wasting your time/money. Doing it right isn't easy, nor cheap. Nor quick.

I agree high quality is very important and is a goal of mine. However, I'd like to have the highest quality, most respectable site possible and create some revenues and once that is goign i can upgrade to a nicer and higher quality site that gives me a better return per visitor.

If you think about Online Retail Shop / E-commerce business, you need to think about your budget and resource.

1. How much investment you have? (There are BigFishes over there who won't let you in through adwords and paid campaigns)
2. How big your resources are? (To promote organically for all kind of your products, you need to have really a good marketing team)
3. How big your warehouse / drop shipping contacts are? (Fast shipping is the key to online retail shop... To do so, you need to have dropshippers / warehouses in the areas that you want to promote)
4. How trendy is your products? (Trend is most important thing in online retail shop. For ex: You cannot sell PS3 Games as the new trend will occupy for PS4 or newer version)

These are are simply a notes. there are lot more in the ocean.

Oh lol, really you need to make plan before you leap into online retail shop / e-Commerce.....

Here are a few main things for me.

1- Look at competition, if you can't be top 3-4 for your main keywords within 6 months you will run out of money/energy to win.
2- Design for credibility over pizazz. People want to buy from a credible retailer - initially focus on having phone numbers/BBB/SSL Certs/Associations ETC over super sexy design. I always have a chat option as well. 10K for a killer re-design is a no brainer once you're making money.
3- don't bite off more than you can't chew. If it's your first site, a 70K product build out will never happen...

there's a lot of good advice here @ BHW, so look around as well.

good luck.

There are quite a few things involved and it would take a massive post to explain everything.

There used to be a really good CB product on this subject called Niche Blueprint. Have a look around the forum and you might find it.

And it's mainly videos as far as I remember, so you won't have to read much.

P.S. Not affiliated with these guys in any way, just mentioning them because their content is pretty good.

A good rule of thumb from what I've seen is to make sure you have at least $10,000 set aside for web development costs, lawyers, logo, and server/IT stuff. Now keep in mind this is if you're going to try to compete with the big dogs, as a serious long-term business. I'm helping a successful company launch a large scale e-commerce shop as we speak and believe me, it is not something you should enter into lightly. There is a lot of work... so be sure you have the free time.

Also make sure you DO NOT RUSH... if you try to get everything done fast you're gonna run into a LOT of costly mistakes and waste a lot of cash. Research everything... shop around. And only deal with people who are totally reputable... one turd in the punch bowl and you're in for a head ache.

Building a new business online is not as easy as it seems. Not every eCommerce business is going to be as Amazon or Flipkart.
1) You need to find what you are best at. What are your best of products that you want to sell online.
2) Decide your target market for a start. You need to have a clear idea of who do you think needs your product the most and understand their internet habits.
3) Understand if your niche has demand online. Are there any people who would really buy your product online? And also who are the competitors for your business and what are the strategies they are using to grow their business.(Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer)
4) After all your study, if you think you need a website.. go for it! But not end up spending too much on it since its just a start.. You can try using WordPress. Its very easy, user friendly and completely free (which is too good!) having amazing themes and plugins to help you set your website just the way you want it to be!
5) Wisely choose your payment gateway. There are various online modes for payment but chose the easiest and most trusted which is a secured platform not only for buyers but also for sellers.
6) SMM. The best and easiest way to promote your online business is Social Media Marketing. Having a social media presence for your business gives you much more business than you planned for. Keep writing and posting about your products on Social media so that people can know what do you sell and what are you best at.
7) People should know why they should buy from you. There are n number of online platforms to buy from but you should be doing something that others are not doing. Create a marketing plan for a start and later keep making changes as the business grows.
8) Use technology a lot. eCommerce is all about being technically smart. Use the latest software's, plugins, accounting methods, etc. Be updated.

I hope i have helped you!
