I have an e-commerce site with about 80,000 pages. Most of these pages have very little in the way of content, besides a product photo and some very basic product info.

In order to give the search engines "something to chew on," I was thinking about creating a couple paragraphs of text, spinning the hell out of them using the best spinner, and them putting the spun content on every page of the site (while also inserting the product name / key phrase of each page) into the text.

This way, there will actually be some meaty text there for Google to chew on. It's going to read like complete garbage, though.

Is this a good / bad idea? Harmful? Thoughts?

I think it will be fine as long as you spread out the post's over time... or if you have posted all of them already then you will need to figure out the keyword you want to rank for on each page then start backlinking those pages... You will need a ton of different backlinks from different IP's in order for google to keep counting your backlinks.
