I just received an email from eBay saying they are signing a new agreement with Adyen to be their 'primary payment processor'. PayPal will remain an option at checkout.

Says the transition will be a multi-year journey.
I guess that contract with PayPal must be expiring.

This is good news for any of you who might have banned PayPal accounts, because if your eBay is still active, you would likely be able to sell again, even with the newer platform accounts.
Although, it seems it will take a long while to implement.

it's big news. I feel that ebay is pretty salty about their relationship with paypal

Despite having a valid PayPal, I am also salty about their relationship with PayPal.
There is no reason why somebody should be able to win an eBay case, and then lose a PayPal case for the same transaction.

It sure will be a multi-year process.

From the looks of it Adyen is a payment gateway for sellers, where buyers can pay with their credit cards. At least this seems to be its primary function in this relation, it's not meant for buyers. The question is given: who would want to pay with credit card, if he/she already has PayPal and the option to pay with it stays? Until eBay doesn't banish PayPal entirely, PayPal will stay primary.

Taking a second look, with Adyen you can accept PayPal payments, which is good, but the dispute/chargeback issues will stay in that case and it will only be more complicated because of two payment processors being involved, not just one.
 
Same sh!t different name. Ebay and their payment partner are not going to evolve. In to fair and rational creatures. That take onboard the views of sellers. Creating a fair playing field with reasonable fees. Supported by a system that would never penalize you for being successful.
 
Doesn't ebay own paypal or something like that?
 
This will be interesting to see how it will go in future. I haven't bought anything on ebay really for long time i remember before there used only to be PP option, lately i noticed you can just enter credit card information and it would process (there are still rarely headaches when paying with cc option because pp doesn't wanna process it or such). I guess with Adyen it will be just faster checkout with maybe less fees or such. Everything other remains same. Also what i read it will be interesting to see how payout system will go, because adyen will then accept cc payments for ebay, and ebay is supossed to later payout to their sellers. Will it maybe become new amazon? :)

Hmmm. This whole deal could be meant to keep regulators at bay. Like claiming its payment system has competition or something like that.

I'd find that plausible, although they had a contract during the separation that mandated PayPal as their main payment processor for some certain high % number of transactions. eBay has directly been saying since the eBay/PayPal severance that they would allow alternative methods as soon as the contract expires. This has been long coming, but the announcement is very new.

I'm not sure about newer accounts but older accounts like mine have been able to do direct credit card processing for a very long time now, and I've even heard of people using Stripe on eBay already, so this is clearly going to be something very integrated into eBay.
 
From what my boss was saying earlier Adyen is HUGE so it's interesting to see how it affects paypal. I've never had a problem but heard a lot of horror stories

Their clients include Uber, Etsy, Spotify, and Netflix....so yeah, they're huge.
Good choice IMO, as they already have experience in this sort of thing.

Hopefully PayPal gets sent back to the hole it came from. :p

Yeah that's what he was reading out. Never heard of them before this strangely, guess its more of a background payment system?

Yes, they handle direct credit card processing.
I could be wrong, as this is purely speculation, but I think it's very likely you'll be entering your credit card numbers directly onto eBay, rather then going off-site to pay.
 
its time for Paypal to change their fees strategy,
