I have a wordpress based site and I am getting hit hard by bots. I have about 2000 hits on wp-admin in the last month and many more on various other behind the scenes pages trying to find an opening. I am not too worried about them getting in but its making my analytics impossible to interpret. Is there an easy way to stop the bots? I am trying to put as few plugins as possible on to keep site fast.

A good cloaker will do that for you : just direct the detected bots to a bot trap (infinite random circular links) somewhere so you waste their bandwidth.
Otherwise you need to roll your own detection routine. Not rocket science but still hard to avoid false positives.

cloudflare is also free and should help you block bots
Well I just installed wordfence and I am about to have a great day...Error establishing database connection which is totally my favorite. I will get it working eventually.
Edit: SQL just crashed and brought itself back ok

Wordfence would block most of the vulnerable attacks on WP. Give a shot!
