Sorry I didn't make myself clear, you're right the larger site gets a lot more traffic. Last month both sites were impacted by their seasonal nature, the larger site did better (a lot better) than it normally does whereas the smaller site did worse (approx 15% down) than normal.
I already had a vps setup and running as I run a number of other sites (one other using SEO but it refuses to gain any traction) so adding these sites wasn't an additional cost.
Both of these are niche blogs, I also run a few other sites of varying types.
Yes when I was running Ezoic on the larger site, the site was noticeably slower, it impacted my ranking as well, as soon as I removed Ezoic my rankings improved but this coincidentally coincided with a google update so could have been either. The smaller site is now on ezoic and the performance hit isn't noticeable but Google is not happy as you can see below, the switch from orange to red is exactly when I added ezoic. I must investigate this further. ahrefs tells me the larger site is DR 21 and the smaller site is DR 2.
This sounds like I'm on a campaign against ezoic, I'm really not as I earn double on the smaller than I did with adsense.

Great, I see that majority of your traffic comes from first world countries US, UK, Canada, Aus, for large site. Smaller site also has major traffic share from the UK. No surprise you must be getting a good CPM for that.
I have 2 important questions for you -
1) How much CPM are you getting for both sites respectively?
2) Where have you registered these domains with? Godaddy? Or anything else?

1) According to adsense the larger site page RPM is £7.85, the smaller site is £1.67, plus £10.68 ePMV from Ezoic for the smaller site.
2) Godaddy
I found getting HARO links reasonably straightforward, I only go for the ones that are super relevant, I worked/still do a little in the industry so I open by listing the number of years I've worked in the field doing x, y & z, then answer whatever it is they're asking in a couple of paragraphs. Finally I finish the email with my contact details if they've got any queries. I do feel the education niche suits this sort of thing as I tried HARO previously on a different project with a qualified carpenter, answer diy questions and never got a link.
The amount invested so far is a really good question and I don't have an exact answer, although I really should. The smaller site I've only spent on the domain so however much I paid for the fresh .com with whatever the godaddy discount was at the time. Plus the share of the server costs. I imagine it being approximately £30 total. I wrote all the content so no direct expense other than my time, I should record the time I spend as well really.
The larger site is more complex, these figures are approximates, I spent £700 on pbn links, £500 on guest posts and niche edits, £300 on blog / forum comments and similar links. The content has been from a mix of sources including me but I'd estimate £400, again plus my time. Writing for this one is interesting as it requires little pain power so I write while winding down in the evening, I couldn't do this with anything else, I've tried writing on other subjects, programming, admin and project management and I can never sleep after doing this kind of work before bed. Normally I wouldn't be able to monetize this time but with this I can, this would make it even harder to calculate my hourly rate. How do you guys factor in your time on projects like this?
I've written all 85 of the articles on the smaller site (mostly written during the time saved on commute due to covid lockdowns), the 250 articles on the larger site have come from vendors on the market place, upwork, plus I know a few writers (I used to work in publishing) and myself. The smaller site has 1 article per month scheduled until Feb next year, I plan to make a decision over Christmas on how I'll produce content for the site going forward, either I'll write a load more and schedule it, hire from upwork or convince some old work colleagues in education to write for me. I'm not sure if I'll have time the articles as I am planning 3 affiliate sites and 2 automated PAA sites, I'm not sure if I'll proceed with all of them but I knew if I got back into IM it would consume me.

Thanks @blackbeans its like the old saying, when is the best time to plant a tree? 20 years ago! When is the second best time? Now. I would have probably hit $1k sooner but work and family take most of my time. Plus I have a terrible tendency to get distracted by shinny things.

That's good for start mate ,it reminded me my days of struggling .
One in entertainment and another in education. About an hour.
Vendors on the market place, upwork, plus I know a few writers and myself. The sooner I can stop writing the better.
