E-Commerce store- build all backlinks to product pages?

In my niche most websites build all of their backlinks to the product pages. I think this makes sense because unlike normal websites you want your product pages to rank. Do you agree that this is the best strategy for e commerce? Or should I still build most links to homepage?

Do both.

Links to product pages are the pages that make you money but links to the homepage will also help.

Home page and big $ product pages.

There's no fixed ratio, each is best looked at on an individual basis.
