Hi all,

For my e-commerce site (over 500 products), what is the general opinion on best link building strategy?
Root domain already has a lot of links - and I understand a good balance is going to be needed.

But in order to push long tail keywords further, that will most probably be easier to rank for, would it be better linking to main/sub categories, or to individual products?

Any advice or examples would be appreciated.

You want to diversity to which pages you link:

- you link mostly to the homepage, as this will spread the link juice to inner pages if you have a good internal linking structure,

- you also link to various internal pages (product page, category page, etc); this is done for a number of reasons: first it looks more natural to google; then it helps you send link juice to specific pages or parts of your site; also it may be more natural depending from what content you link (context) and what anchor you use.

Silo your site and diversify links through a well maintained on-site blog. Make sure your ecommerce
products contain long descriptions. Most ecommerce sites lack content!

Thanks guys - anyone else had good experience for this?

Building a blog, aside from just your product pages, is a good idea because Google values content. Long articles add depth to your site and having multiple pages gives the impression that you are an authority site. You can also produce content that is "linkbait" - in other words, content that is likely to be picked up and shared by other website and social media channels (maybe even go viral), transferring tons of link juice to you.
