Okay since i am dutch but have never really tried to rank any .NL website before i had some project ideas and went onto investigating competitor site backlinks etc.

I found some websites ranking page #1 for elite keywords by just having social bookmark and angela profile backlinks, nothing more.. not even in high quantities.

What is going on here? Does the google penguin etc not apply for dutch google? None of the competitors have any PBN or type of new-age-seo links..

PS. i know a similar thread was posted about another country few weeks ago but i lost it.

LOL, I was in your situation a few months ago. Uncle G does not care much for foreign languages since the biggest market in the world is english speaking.
I ll tell you a small story . Once upon a time in my beginning years I was researching backlinks of competitors and few certain people stuck out like a sore thumb. The person who got 1st position has a Germany wide service , and each of his city pages rank top on 1st page and in many cases 1st position in DE. With the help of PBNs , You might be thinking another guy writing about the same stuff I read on BHW every single day , let me get to the strange part , the person or competitor I am referring to has atleast 30 pbns for every city page 90 % of the pbns had his office address and his real name as the website owner on a page called impressum (Impressum is contact version of German and by law you have to state you are the owner of the published website) . What happened to google penalties I am watching him since 3 years and he keeps building and building without even using whois privacy .

    LOL

It depends on the niche actually, from my experience. When the niche is generally "gray" in terms of website competition and 50-60% of the sites are more or less crappy, then Google isn't showing that it cares too much for the results they provide.

I have a similar example with the OP on Greek Google, on many niches. But if the niche is like news, or health or something that most of the sites HAVE TO provide quality content otherwise they're slapped by the users themselves, Google seems to be serving results and users properly.

This is all anecdotal though, or even speculation, but it comes from a long term observation on how Google works among different countries and niches.

Some country specific "Googles" are behind and some are super way behind. HU, **, SK, CZ "Googles" are still pretty much in 2010. German and Dutch may be in 2013 etc.

There are 2 theories why this is so. Again, just theories:

    1. - Either Google doesn't give a fuck about updating the algorithms too much here, because the markets are small and don't bring too much money anyway.
    2. - The selection of sites on the national level that you can get backlinks from is limited. So the smaller the country, the less quality links Google allows you to rank with.

I found out the same thing man.

I see my competitors use crazy anchor ratios and I see A LOT of highly 'dangerous' (not in this case it seems) directory links.
