Duplicated Content

Hi guys!
I know that the thumb rule about duplicated content is that it caused you site to get penalized, but what about content that must be duplicated, all at least will be the same in every site that'll show it (like song lyrics sites, technical descriptions etc.)?

You can add lots of snippets everywhere to make your content relatively unique. Your title and meta tags should be unique, you should have short descriptive lines as well as related links which should work good enough.

Hey in your case one of the best ways to do this is with images, since Google cannot read images and only would read alt tag on image. If you notice and go to many linux or ubuntu blogs that have tutorials teaching how to fix or install something on your linux system they all use the same commands for this and most of them use images to show them to avoid this problem.

I have been running a blog about song lyrics.
you don't have to worry about copied content. Just structurize your content.

You can vary words with a little twist.
Something like. translating it into second language and adding videos images and keywords in between.
well, my site is getting 400+ daily visitors and 60% of that from Bing and other search engines.

On another thing mentioned here, about the images:
Google can and already using OCR technologies, I did an experiment around a year and a half ago with an image that showed text in hebrew (a non-competitive, not often used sentence), the image was posted on a relatively blank page (except for the menu that was fixed on the site) and on a site that spoke on another topic - so Google didn't have any hints about that texted image.
After a while (2-3 weeks if I'm not mistaken), I searched google images for the text that were on the image and they found it.
If they did it with Hebrew, they are definitley doing it with English and other languages.
