In the instance where one or a few websites sell the same products and have the same product descriptions, would that be considered duplicate content and if so is there any way around it apart from writing new content as the original is perfectly fitted.

Yes, that is duplicate content. Got to write new content, i do not think there is any work around it. Unless you create an image for product description in which case there would be no content at all which is also frowned upon.

Yeah it's considered duplicate content. Try to spin the content and use it :)

Yes, its duplicate and the only workaround is to re-write your content.

if the ratio is say 70% unique and 30% duplicate - is that acceptable?

A long long time ago google leaked that uniqueness was determined by 13 consecutive words being the same. Since we don't know the offset and we have to worry about boundary conditions we need to make every 6th word different to safely create uniqueness. This has always worked for me and even passes copyscape in all the tests I've done.

The 13 words leak always made sense to me because english has about 250,000 words and about 25,000 are commonly used on the web. So we are conservatively looking at a 13 digit base 25,000 number... which is astronomical. Changing every sixth word guarantees that at least one changed digit will occur in the digest no matter what offset is used.

Of course a human quality rater could see through this, but if your concern is algorithmic uniqueness then this will probably do the trick.

It doesn't cost much to outsource the re-writing of the descriptions, which I think you would be better off doing really.

I now am getting most of my website re-written and wondering if changing 90% of my content will get me on google's bad side?

does copyscape only search the url and not the entire site? is there a tool to search an entire site for copies of the content?

You can use article spinners for getting the unique content of the previous one.
Because only unique content is valuable in the World of computer. It will be dummy act to use duplicate content.
