Hi all

I'm setting up an online shop on my website.
The shop will include products with very similar product descriptions and FAQs.

How much of a concern is the following?

  1. ON THE SAME PAGE: product description copy that appears in the main description area AS WELL AS in the FAQs
    • I.e. Is it OK to repeat the product description copy in the FAQs? Or will this be problematic in the eyes of Google?
  2. ON MULTIPLE PAGES: product description copy or FAQs that is very similar across multiple product pages
    • I.e. Will very similar product descriptions / FAQs on multiple product pages be problematic? Make it difficult to rank?

it's best to avoid repeating the same product descriptions in the FAQs, even on the same page. A little variation helps with SEO. For different product pages, having similar descriptions can hurt their rankings, so encourage them to make each one unique. A few tweaks or highlighting different features can really help!

Repeating content on the same page is not a worse one but it must varied to give add on value. Just differentiate those content. For FAQ, Give your content as Q&A type in view of audience.

Across multiple pages, similar content may harm rankings due to duplicate content concerns. Differentiate descriptions, use canonical tags, or consolidate products to avoid dilution. Just Focus on unique features, use cases, or benefits specific to each product. Even small variations can help.

You should not have similar content descriptions as Google will mark those as spam... Try to differentiate the content.

Yes it could be problematic. Google don't allow same content and Mark them as spam. It will reduce your SEO scores while will hamper your ranking.

repeating product descriptions in FAQs on the same page isn't a big issue, but I'd avoid doing it too much. Across multiple pages, very similar copy could lead to content duplication concerns, potentially hurting rankings. I’d try to make each product description and FAQ as unique as possible to avoid penalties.

Content duplication is a worse thing you can do to a site. Show few changes in each content by adding something unique in that page rather the same content.

Content duplication is something that will definitely affect your SEO. If possible, try using chatgpt to change the content in either the FAQ or the description so the content is not duplicated

It's better to avoid duplicate content wherever possible
Just use AI to rewrite and make sure it reads well

Thank you, everyone, for taking the time to share your thoughts.

It's clear from your comments it's worth making the effort to tailor the content and make it unique across pages.

Thanks for your insights.

Well, Google really restricts duplicate content, but in this scenario with a shop site having the same FAQ details I don’t think it will cause any issues. :)

I have run eCommerce sites in past with consistent organic traffic from Google. I would avoid duplicate content. Product description and any question/answer specific to the product would go on the product page.
Common questions like shipping policies, refund policies etc. would go in a separate FAQ.

Very helpful - thanks for your specific recommendations.

I actually disagree with most people here.

I personally don't think duplicate content is that big of a deal for ecommerce sites, I have worked with big and small ecommerce sites owners that don't give a single crap about rewriting product description.

The question you should ask is if your new products description can provide better value to your viewers than the original one, if your answer is meh or no, then you probably are focusing on the wrong thing.

What can cause issue:
What you should worry about is duplicate products, if you just slapping the same product on multiple products page then that is a real problem that you need to figure out how to solve.

If your products have multiple variations, then maybe it is a good idea to have them set up under 1 product? Hard to tell without seeing the site.

As many mentioned , avoid using duplicate content especially in the form of descriptions and FAQs.
