Hi,

I've been getting mixed opinions on the whole topic about whether or not duplicate content is allowed,

take for example this article: http://www.billdunphy.ca/?p=21

It's quite old, I know.

I run a new site, according to some people, If I completely copy the content from another news website, but provide a link back to them - it's 100% White hat and won't lead to penalization?

Does this only apply to already well established websites such as Huffington Post?

It seems that everyone is after unique content, as I can understand that it certain other aspects of internet marketting - does it apply to new sites?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

As far as my experience content duplicate content is an issue only on the same site.

If you post the same thing on your site that's not a problem at least in terms of SEO (not talking about copyright issues). Otherwise how would all those press release survive with all the same articles?

I bet you would get a lot of mixed opinions on this same thread as well.

So the best way is to see it yourself with your eyes. Get a domain, put some copied content, backlink that and see if it ranks or not. :)

I think quoting the original source link with duplicate content is fine. But you can't really use a competitions content on your site and link back to him can you?

Agree, technically duplicate content counts only when it is on same domain.

Rest is content syndication and press releases are good example. However, in the eyes of Google same syndicated content (what you call duplicate) will have less value than unique. What you can do is take that content and add a bits of unique content to it - like a comment/editors note. This will increase it's value.
