Duplicate Content on a news site.

My question is pretty quick and to the point.

This major news site has completely copied the article from the website listed below it.
hxxp://www.huffingtonpost.com/the-center-for-public-integrity/allen-west-fuels-his-nonp_b_3087895.html

hxxp://www.publicintegrity.org/2013/04/15/12496/allen-west-fuels-his-nonprofit-campaign-cash

All they did was, "This story was originally published by The Center for Public Integrity, which is a nonprofit, nonpartisan investigative news organization in Washington, D.C." How is this ok? I mean, huffingtonpost is a huge news site. I looked at their code and they didn't even point the canonical links back to the publicintegrity domain. Does that mean huffingtonpost is now getting the credit for this article? Does the google bot read that it was originally posted from the prior website? Are they getting dinged for duplicate content?

Syndicated articles, if you take something from another site and link back to the site it's all good.

Is there a "special" way to tell google where the syndicated article originated from ?

Basically,all you have to do is to link back to the source in the propper way.
If you don't know much about Seo,stay away from playing with dupe content as you might get ur site penalized.

It's also the same author publishing it on both sites which means that HuffPost didn't copy it and that the author just reproduced it there as well.

They could of easily just written the authors name to give him credit though also.

Also, if you google "Allen West fuels his nonprofit with campaign cash" the original site still comes up in google news even though dozens of other sites had completely copied the article.

I guess google news figures it out anyway. I'm just wondering though, if you have permission from the original author to post his article on your site, and you link it properly, is there still a chance that you can be penalized? What if the original authors site is some completely unknown site, and you promote it to a high PR trusted google news source with proper linking, would the unknown site then show up in google news? Or would the Google News site get the credit?

Well most of huffington posts stuff is dupe, they just know how to properly link their stuff.

I see this stuff all the time. Word for word and all they did was state where they got the information from. State your source and link it back and I think that the search engines will be ok with it.

As long as you give credit to the author and list the source of the original article then it should be ok to do this.
