I run a few AdWord campaigns for a company. Its small, few searches and 1 competitor, so I'm pretty lazy with it. I've got one ad-group set up for the brand, let's pretend its Walmart. The keywords:
Bidding:
Walmart - Bid .50
"Walmart toys" - Bid .20
"Walmart bikes" - Bid 1.00
super center - Bid .75
shopping center - Bid .75
[super specific keyword] - Bid .88
Blacklisted:
"review"
I know its not good to use the same keywords in different ad-groups because you'll end up bidding against yourself. However, what about the broad-match keyword (Walmart) in combination with phrase match keywords ("Walmart toys" etc). I wanted to bid lower for "toys" because its a low value phrase, but higher for bikes. However, with a catch-all Walmart, am I causing a difference in bid price?
The brand is so unique that unlike most campaigns where broad match brings in a shitload of bad results, this isn't the case.
