Money in the drug game follows the same principles as anywhere else:
risk for reward. The returns are high but so are the risks (ie death and lifetime inprisonment).
But it's insane how much money they make. Paolo Escobar was another famous drug lord, his life was really interesting to hear about.

Height: ~5 times length of a banknote
USD banknote dimensions:
Length: 6.14 inch, 16.25cm
Width: 2.61 inch, 6.62cm
Thickness: 0.0043 inch, 0.1mm
Results physical dimensions of the pile of money:
Width: 35*6.62cm = 2.31m
Depth: 11*16.25 = 1.78m

If all of the banknotes in the pile are 100 USD denomination which is highest, and if we calculate using thickness of a banknote without taking into account the fact there are gaps in between them (unrealistic), results:
Number of times thickness of a banknote fits within its length: 162.5/0.1 = 1625 times. In other words, in a stack as tall as the length of a banknote, you have 1625 banknotes. That gives us the entire pile of money would have 1625*5 = 8125 banknotes heigh. Results:
35*11*8125 = 3,128,125 banknotes in the pile
3,128,125 * 100USD = 312,812,500 ~= 312 million USD
312 mil USD is not even close to 18 billion USD as this mentions - "This pile of cash before it was counted was estimated to be approximately 18 Billion Dollars!"
...unless my math is totally off. Also keep in mind in reality, because of the gaps between the banknotes you would probably have way less. Those money don't look new and nice so it doesnt looks they're stacked well. So the loss in height might be anything between 30 to 100%. In other words more realistic amount of money there could be anything between 150 to 200 million USD. However you put it, even if i have estimated quite incorrectly the size of the pile, you don't get anywhere near 18 billion USD. We wouldn't reach 18 billion not even if we'd count the money in every drawer and bag that's shown in those pictures and probably not even in every drawer in his villa. As a matter of fact, 18 billion would be a pile of cash 57 times taller (that's 45 meters tall; a 4 story building is around 15 meters tall)!

From what i find on wikipedia (please correct me if I read this the wrong way and you're from USA and know better) - 1 person's health insurance was around $3500 (worker) + $9800 (employer) = $13300 which i'm assuming is per year.

That results in a 4.17 trillion USD. Multiply that by 12 years they say and you get 50 trillion USD. That's what the pile of money should be to make their statement accurate. Maybe some figures here are off, maybe they're not. Of course in practice not every US citizen pays $13300/year in health insurance. Some are self employed, some don't pay at all, etc. So if you'd go and look for some figure of all money going into health insurance the figure would be less than 4 trillion i calculated here.
As a matter of fact, if the pile of cash is 300 million, that would make cost of health insurance less than $1/year for US population. If the pile would be 18 billion as they say, that would mean 18000 mil / 314 mil = 35 USD/citizen/year. Doesn't fukken add up with the numbers they pulled out of their ass!!!
That's why you should not believe all the shit you read! That's why is so easy to trick people and influence what they think and how they think. If this guy was a country, when some would have read he stole money equaling 12 years health insurance for all people in USA, I bet some of those would have been ok with it being invaded so "we can help out the population". What they would be too ignorant to know is that US basically spends billions a day (or some obscene figure which i dont remember exactly) just to cover the interest of the money they borrowed. You know how they fix that? They lower the value of money for everybody else through "printing" money. So, do look at that storry, because it is a simple example of misinformation through media (even though that site is not mainstream media and runs off a potato like somebody said) and how combining made up figures with psychological triggers (the bastard stole so much money that could have been used to help health of entire USA, including you) can affect what you perceive. Homework task: spot something like that next time you read a newspaper or watch the news on TV!
