Should I automatically send customers/buyers order tracking numbers after fulfilling their orders or do I wait upon request?

Something I have been struggling with also. I ran a test order to myself, it's been 3 days and the tracking number is still not "valid". In the beginning I plan to hold off on sending it to the customer until i can confirm it... once i have a big enough sample size i'll determine the average length of time before it's valid and automate it to the customer.

I been having the same trouble except with mine is that I have a tracking order link on my Shopify store for customers to track their orders

Send automatically; why would you wait?

In my case, the shipping number is returned as "invalid". It took nearly 5 days before it appeared in the system.
As a customer, it would create concern and may increase the number of inquiries.

Then there are 2 options:
1. They will ask you why they can't track. You reply, wait few days before it updates in the system.
2. Add manually each after 5 days (when trackable).

I just send them automatically as soon as I get them. A few, from time to time, ask why they can't track it, and I just reply to wait a few more days.
