Dropped guest posts an issue?

I recently checked back on some guest posts I have previously purchased and noticed the page was either a 404 or they'd removed my link and kept the article. Each one has been helpful when I queried what had happened and either refunded or reinstated the link but is this a problem people often experience?

1 site I had reached out to, another one was from a guest post provider and 2 were from a guest post market place.

It's a problem that happens once in a while. I've experienced it once or so. They usually refund or reinstate links. Advantage of working with a reliable seller, be it on a marketplace or a middleman is that you either get your money back or a reinstatement.

It's also good to keep a record of all links you buy. Though when you buy a large number of links, you may not be able to go through them all.

In my experience you always end up chasing after the cheap outfits because links disappear in <12 months. I use a link tracking service to advise me when a link is dropped - then I can contact them and complain. Over the years I've found good sources where well over 90% of the links stay up for more than a year - some indefinitely. Sadly, it's trial and error.

is it such a big secret that you can't share it with everyone? Because I'd like to know it, too :)
 
It's a good idea to keep a record of your links, as it was mentioned above.
I use a simple excel sheet and run a macro(now and then) which checks if the post is still live but by adding a few more lines of code I'd be able to see if my link is still there and if the article is still indexed by google.
 
Is it common for people to use one of these link tracking services? or do most people do what I've been doing, excel document and occasionally checking manually?

Fair point. I use Linkody. It sometimes shows a dropped link when it is in fact still valid so if you get a notification double check before hassling the provider. You have an option to mark a link "ok" even if it shows as being dropped.

And "oops" on the pm...

Try to contact them and ask them for refund. If they are from a marketplace raise a dispute, raise a dispute with paypal or your bank.
If all else fails complain it to google about the website that they are selling gust posts and have scammed you and that they are a link farm against the google tos.
 
Since the inception of Penguin and Panda, SEOs have been shifting from link building strategies that may have involved anything from mass article submissions, social bookmarking, directory submissions in bulk, purchasing links, as well as other frowned upon strategies and have recently jumped on the guest posting bandwagon.
