Do dropped domains with no backlink history do better than brand new domains?
I found 2 very brandable names for a new site but one name has never been registered before while the other is of a more than 15 years old domain without much history (I checked with waybackmachine)
The old domain has 0 backlink to it but will it do better?

The answer is the older domain will 'probably' be better.

If both of them have 0 backlinks and have never had any backlinks (Majestic can uncover historical links), you want to consider if the older domain was ever indexed in Google.

You want to think in terms of a domain's 'Index Age' over just it's 'Registration Age'.

Also, how much benefit you might get from the older domains will probably be affected by how long it's been dropped.

There's no harm in setting up a Search Console profile for the older domain and seeing what info Google might have on it already.

No, old domains do better because they have backlinks already built for them.

Without the backlink, they worth nothing and actually, its better to start with brand new domain. Why? Cuz you risk using a domain you don't know its history, without any benefit from the risk you are taking!

Since the old domain name has no backlinl and no history. They are more or less the same. You are starting from the scratch with both. Better to choose the one that is shorter, sounds good, memorable or keyword-rich.

I've contemplated purchasing a few expired/deleted domains - some of the backlink numbers were huge. But really how useful..

An old domain that was bought and then let to expire, that has no backlinks or never been online, is the same as a new domain for Google's AI.
