The problem with using javascript is that some people use the NoScript addon for Firefox. This simply forbids all Javascript to be executed with those people that is not on the whitelist. By default only google, wikipedia and a bunch of other reliable websites are whitelisted, everything Javascript else is forbidden, so relying on JS for that, with people using NoScript would leak the referer, and that could dictate the difference between receiving a check or not.
