Okay, so I have an app idea that I want to take a legitimate stab at creating. Before I make the mistake of spamming people to use my app. Is there a more creative way to get to them?

Dont go in to extremes. Make app - send it to 200-300 leads. See if they use. If they do and you got no complaints from them, start sending another 200-300 emails a day.
 
Yes, how about skillfully engaging them in actual conversation pertaining to the service this software is to provide. Maybe ask them how they think certain aspects can be better, you know include them in the creation process if it's not super secret, if so then you have to skillfully feed them enough to intrest them but not enough to give away the whole basket of apples..Kinda like an Artful Dodger... I know you've seen those type of threads here on BHW- lol
 
Create the application first and then I would have friends and family test it until I get enough feedback to decide if it is worth it :)
 
You need to figure out all the things first which will make that better apart.
 
Make an app and then send invitations to few people to test that they use your app or not. If they do, then do social media marketing of your app and send invitations to more people..
