Domains with "the" on them?

I'm trying to create an authority site. I'm at the stage choosing a domain for it.

Right now I have two options:

1. (Main keyword)(something else)
2. [the](Main keyword)(something else)

Both are available.

So my question is: Are domains with "the" on them recommended?

PS: Right now I can only afford to buy one of them.

Yes, using the as prefix is fine. Since you are building authority site, i would recommend easy to remember and short domain name.

Try searching for a peppy or a brandable name rather than the keyword stuffed domain when you are going for an authority site.

"Totally Agree." Authority sites are long term. Everything changes with time, don't limit yourself to a keyword(s). This will allow you to expand in any direction. Short, Trendy name would be your best bet.. Good Luck with your venture..

Unless you're using "the" to make it part of a brand, or have some neat meaning, then definitely it's required.

But if you're just adding it so you get the .com version, then it's not worth it.

For example: The Doors would require the. TheMicrosoft.com is cheap trademark infringement.

I had this same dilemma about a week ago when i was trying to figure out what to do about "the". Ultimately I decided to ditch it. Why? Assuming it is an authority site and is planning on being around for a while, you are really hoping for offline word of mouth. Unless you have a real catchy name that just NEEDS to have the word the in it...most people will just totally forget about the word. An example would be "Home Depot". They are technically called "The Home Depot"...but noone ever says the word "the". It's always forgotten about.

if it's helpful in bringing out the brand you promoting , it's fine. But i don't feel you should use it unnecessarily

So many people put prefixes in their domains, SE's tend to just drop them. If there are two sites..... Keyword.com and TheKeyword.com, whatever site had the best content would rank the highest. Of course, many other factors should be taken into consideration.

If you're going authority, it all ties into your branding.

thedailynews.com, "the" used well
thebeautifulbabies.com, "the" not used well

If I was making an authority site, I would not buy a domain with a keyword in it.

For an Authority website, I would choose a shorter domain that is memorable/brandable. I would stay away from prefixes such as "the".
