Domains Missing 1 Letter

if i had a domain that was missing 1 letter of the keyword that I wanted to rank for
such as ranking for 'basketball'
and i had the basketbal domain name.....would i still be able to rank well for the keyword 'basketball' and compete well against the basketball domain name?

It's better for you to have an additional letter then not to have it. If you don't have a letter at the keyword search engine wouldn't recognize it as the letter you meant

Personally, I'd just add another word and make sure that the spelling for the main keyword is correct.

In your given example, I'd go for something like basketballtips.com rather than basketbal.com.
