Does the ranking or SEO effect if the domain has dash in it and one without dash?

Doesn't matter except it would be weird to tell someone your site with hyphen in it

No it doesn't matter, but people generally hate dashes
so-don't-go-for-this.com

Not much difference. I have ranked both type of domains with almost same efforts. However like everyone above said, hyphens look weird for those who want to visit your website by typing in your domain name and you might lose typo traffic because of this.
