To brand or not to Brand?

So the word is spiders love related domain names..

But when you look at the most successful sites there not related, there branded. so what to do? go with the related long tail ugly domain name or try and brand it from the start ? how much more will google love me with a related domain name verses a branded domain name or a attempt to brand a domain name?

when I say brand I'm talking about a catchy domain name like google or yahoo

If you have small competition in that niche, the fact that your keywords are found in the domain name count around 10 % in the serps. If the competition in that field is strong, the importance of the name decrease steadily.

Nice post, and one I actually have been playing with branding myself. In my case, I have a catchy little title that is interesting, not too long, and can be used as a verb, a noun, etc that I thought of. Now, I have my first site up, a small blog as a subdomain of a old URL I had in my pocket that is pure whitehat....that's my first step.
Since the catchy name seems to be a hit, I registered the domain...thats step two. This is week 4 of the blog, and since it is something that I enjoy doing a great deal, it is a site I update and work on every day, and am starting to build up some decent traffic.

Step three is to find some related niches that appeal to my targeted audience. So I have like 3 identified, and have started doing the work to bring those online, and I will set them up as sub-domains, and all the pages will use similar graphics, look and feel, etc. I threw together a fast and dirty website building script that will generate the content of my site locally. Since it is all static, and all three niches are somewhat similar in structure, this script can be used for all three, with only the template I use for each page needing to be changed to make a new site.

Now, I have my brand...my main site, and then my three sub-domains, which all present to the user a unified look and feel, and since the niches are highly targeted and somewhat related, there are natural synergies that can be generated between the sites, and a lot of interlinking. So, my bounce rate off my landing page should start to drop, as more people see my main page, and decide that it would be neat to grab some highly related "stuff" from my other pages. All ad supported of course.

Now, my next step will be to bring the full power of blackhatting to bear to start driving traffic to my sites. I have already one script in place that I wrote a few weeks ago, and I am already seeing small bump in traffic. One of the reasons I am here is to get some ideas on other methods.

Sorry, I know thats a long post, but to sum it all up...I do believe in branding. Once you establish a brand, it can be a powerful thing. People are loyal to brands...and once you have that loyalty, you can leverage it to launch into new markets.
