Domain name stealing?

Hello everyone

I am wanting a discussion and everyone's opinion on searching for available domain names.
I have seen to many horror stories about "Go Daddy" marking what names you search. Buying them and then listing them
for a hefty price.

So who can we trust to search for available domain names from?

Wanting thoughts and opinions.

i never had this problem i personnaly use gandi.net which is european

I think this goes to every domain stores out there, this happened to my friend too. Search in google then buy it from your domain provider, just to be safe.
 
I would suggest you to have a look at Namecheap. Its pretty good and works like a charm.
It keeps running different deals and has got some amazing worth-a-look offers as well.
 
I converted from GoDaddy to NameCheap recently. And so far I believe NameCheap can be trusted. Plus every dot com I register with them comes with privacy free. Not so for GoDaddy which comes at an extra price.

Even recently I saw a .fm domain that was available but NameCheap doesn't have it. GoDaddy does. But I went with Network Solutions instead though its a bit more expensive.

I think namecheap only offers free privacy for 1 year. Starting 2nd year, you will have to pay also.
 
Namecheap seems pretty interesting so far. I just know GoDaddy seems to really take peoples ideas
and domains out from under them.

I always use godaddy to check because their bulk checker has the highest capacity. I've never seen them snatch domains from what I've checked with the bulk checker and I've used it exclusively for years so I've concluded that they only snatch domains that you type into their search box.

When it comes time to buy go to namecheap or internet.bs.
 
I just recently registered my website with 1and1 and they have been very helpful, it was fast, and very cheap.

That is true, but it is fairly cheap still. They have a coupon for Whoisguard that makes it even cheaper off the top of my head I think it's "wgspecial", but I could be wrong.
 
The practice is called "front running". The only way to be 100% safe from this practice, even though it's rare to see it in play these days, is to search availability at the Registry level. So if you're looking for .com/.net, pull up Verisigns whois interface (G search will find you the url). Or use Internic's whois, which uses Verisigns maintained data as well.

I highly doubt however Godaddy or any of the larger Registrars are front running these days - fyi. I'm 99.9% positive it's not happening.

If you like the name just buy it. If somone else take the name in the meantime I don't see a problem with that. Go daddy is a great choice as far as I am concirned.
There are like thousands of domain searches every day. What if they decide to purchase every name out there that somebody searched for, I guess they would be out of the business super fast.
 
I think there is a way for other people to monitor godaddy to see what searches are being run and then front run it. I had it happen to one of my domains I was interested on. It was a good short original name.
 
I haven't read all the replies, but in case anyone doubts that godaddy steals your domain, I am here to confirm that they do. I looked up a domain, 12 hours later, it was registered.
