Does having the word "Pokemon" violate rules with regards to trademarks in domain names?

If so, any alternative suggestions?

Yes but you can always ask. I have contacted sites and asked about using a domain that had their trademarked name within and have gotten permission to use them. Of course I've been told no as well. The ones that approved the domains names for were sites that I am an affiliate with and the domain was used to promote there content so that helped.

Yes. I don't go near trademark names. I have lost 3 solid businesses due to that. Now I create a brand where necessary. Like the guy above says. You can always ask...

In the case of pokemon, I can not ask. They are not allowing it. How do I go about this? I have a killer traffic source but it needs to be in this niche.

Nope , you could have for .e.g "pokemon review" domain name ..., see http://www.paypalsucks.com/ , "paypal sucks" ...
paypal bank tried to take it off for trademark ..., but considerd review site .......
but you could face troubles with other keywords considerd trademark ..........

Yes it violates, try to avoid already-registered-words in domains, I had a friend who were using facebook in his domain and he got a notification directly from fb security...

Probably best if you avoid using a trademarked name directly, especially if you have no way to even ask. Maybe just try something similar enough without the risk of copyright infringement.
