domain name hyphen or not?

I am thinking in buying a new domain which has two real words in it. For the sake of argument say it is golden syrup. golden-syrup.com is available as is goldensyrup.com Is there any difference in using these. Just feel the hyphenated one looks more like the two words.

Yes it makes it look like two words.

But I guess the real question is who is your target market. Are you trying to build a brand where people go and type your domain name in and come to your site and do what ever? Or you just posting links and having people come in from links and its kind of a one and done deal.

If you want customers to come back I would not put the - in. as most wont remember that they just remember the name and try to search it.
 
I'd go with non-hyphen one as it's easy to type and remember.
 
I would also prefer to not have the 'hyphen' in the domain name. Go with the "goldensyrup" one as they are easy to remember for returning visitors.
 
If you post the domain everywhere as GoldenSyrup.com it still looks like two words. Google won't care about the hyphen but you will have return visitors going to GoldenSyrup.com instead of Golden-Syrup.com because they forgot the hyphen.
 
It doesn't look professional and its harder for your visitors to type and remember.
 
The only advantage of having hyphen in domain name was - The search engines are not confused. That is,they treat hyphens or dashes as a blank spaces and it is able to distinguish your keyword better.

The disadvantages are,

  • Visitors forget to type the hyphen while searching your site.
  • People feel difficult to read your hyphenated domains.
  • And people usually get the wrong URL while they miss the hyphen....
 
Definitely no hyphen if possible.
 
I would vote for non hyphen as it makes the URL simpler and logo more memorable.
 
Are you buying it to flip it afterwards? If so, hyphen domains has no resale value in domain flipping. For ranking, i have been using a domain with hyphen with no problem
 
No numbers. No hyphen

In case you are German ... The go for it. The more 24 and - the better .
But making money online is #neuland for them anyway...
