We are working on Spain's projects. The target location is worldwide. As we are targeting a worldwide audience the content should be in English. What has been done.. the pages have two versions one is in Spain language and the other in English. Same content, same structure, same images, but two URLs for example:
One is:- http://www.xyz.com/es/pagename (Spain version)
Other is:- http://www.xyz.com/pagename (English version)

Is this right? What should be the correct way to deal with two languages in a single website?

Separate URLs for each language work well, but make sure to use hreflang tags so search engines know which version to show. Keep the URL structure consistent and tweak content slightly for each audience. Also, add both versions to your sitemap with hreflang tags to help search engines index them correctly.

Your website URL structure is perfect to deal according to multi-language site, and it is also fine to have same content and media (but in different languages as per the version), now you just need to follow other additional SEO practices like -
1) adding proper hreflang tags
2) providing proper language switching options,
3) updating html lang attributes etc.
4) Make sure the content and media in Spanish version is all in Spanish, and in English version - all in English.

You can also optimize and do SEO separately on your English and Spanish versions with separate or translated keywords for different language versions. You will need to promote English version for worldwide targeting and for Spain, your target will be /es version.

It's great to have separate URLs for spansish and english contents but you need to optimize your website accordingly will improve indexig, user experience and search results
