domain name age

How much does the age of an active domain really matter in seo rankings? Or perhaps that is just one of many variables you have to consider so its hard to estimate?

Maybe if you are targeting really competitive keywords, than the aged domain might give you a little bit of an edge?

I register a lot of domains for my web design clients and some of them will cancel after a while and not want their site or domain any longer so I just let the domains expire. Usually they are not anything special but some have had sites up for 5 or more years.

I see people sometimes asking for or selling aged domains so wondering if maybe there is something I could do with these domains instead of just letting them expire?

If they're aged and have not been revamped time and time again there's definitely value in them (providing the domain itself is a good domain). I'd put them to good use if I were you.

A lot of the domains I let expire have names that have nothing to do with my IM projects so I will just continue to let those go.

If I have a new domain, it takes a while to get up in the search. But if I have a domain that has been hosted a while its get indexed much faster. Sometimes I may register the domain and upload a few files and do some testing then do nothing for a year. But then when I complete the site and start doing seo on it, I get quick results I guess since the site has been there for a while already even though it was pretty much static the whole time.

So I am thinking that if I am registering new domains for different IM projects I should look for recently expired domains first. Maybe look them up in the archives and see if there has been a site there for the past few years. If there was then wouldn't it be that much easier to get quick seo results than on a brand new domain name?
