Scrapebox is the best tool for this. You can even find expired domains in google serps (it means that they have just expired and are not deindexed yet, so if you register them fast they don't lose their authority).
1 step - scrape google serps with your keywords
2 step - use Alive check addon and find 404 domains
3 step - scan 404 domains with Domain Resolver addon - those without IP are probably dead and may be expired
4 step - use any domain bulk checker online to check these domains for availbility
Expired web 2.0 sites can be found by Vanity Name checker addon

I would never, ever buy domains based on third party metrics. That is just a great way to waste money. Those metrics should only be used as filters and absolutely nothing more.
That being said, I prefer DomCop. Great tool. Worth every penny.

DomCop looks interesting, but what actually it does? Shows domains that will be available for purchase soon for regular domain price or show sites that are auctioned? I just checked their plan, it is too expensive, why should you pay for it when similar free services exist?

It helps to find domains that have expired and domains in auctions. I used it almost exclusively for auctions. DomCop offers far more options and ways to filter domains. They changed their plan to annual, so it more cost. But you can buy from group buy service to save your budget.

I used this domcop group buy service . they are selling for $50/month for domcop guru plan account. It is not cheap, but still save budget instead pay $1416 for one year.
