Domain Frustration

I don't know how you Domainers do it!

Domaining is like the WildWildWest --- only you've got a 6-shooter, and the big dogs have machine guns.

The source of my frustration? Over a year ago I was interested in a domain which had one of those "This domain may be for sale" signs on it---thats it --- no site development, not even parked. I offered the owner $100. Nope. Not interested. OK, so I went and bought a very similar domain. VERY close, but no cigar. Still, it only cost me $7.

I checked back 6mos later, and the For Sale sign is still there. I created a new ID, used different IP and offered $200. Nope, still not interested. OK... fine. Too rich for my blood...

That was about 6mos ago. I noted his expiration and checked back a week afterwards. Guess what? He didn't renew!! Asshole turned down my $200 but let the freaking domain expire!!!! It is now 5weeks later and some friggin megaDomainer is tasting it. Now I'm waiting to see if/when it'll finally drop. %#&$*%# My fingers are crossed!

Anybody got a success story to share with me while I hope beyond hope?

How do you Domainers do it?

The big dogs have it, your right and if you use one of those services like SnapNames or the one from GoDaddy you end up bidding with other people on the domain -and their is no way you're going to beat GoDaddy to the drop LOL

It is the wildwest, but with the added 0.25 fee that iCANN is trying to make non-refundable to stop tasting, you might see ALOT of domains open up.

Its getting tighter and tighter every year. You have to work your way up to be able to compete with the others who can use money as their main tool to obtain domains.

Start small, within little niche markets and slowly work your way up.

Thanks Atlas, but I'm leaving that area to the pros. Domaining is not my cup of tea at all. Dealing with that sort of frustration day-after-day would give me too many grey hairs! As you can guess, obtaining/maintaining domains ranks high on my list of least favorite chores!

I GOT IT! I GOT IT! I GOT IT! For $7 WOOHOO!!

I left it alone and checked this morning, AND IT WAS AVAILABLE!! It's mine! ALL MINE!!
[insert Maniacal Laughter here]

Score one for the little guys! I feel like I won the lotto. Great way to start the weekend!

Sorry Mazemiami, but divulging your domain on a public forum --- especially one frequented by hackers, crackers, etc is NOT the best of ideas.

Congrats It can be very difficult market to get into.

Did you resist the temptation to send an email back to the guy throwing it in his face that you offered him $200 and he turned it down, and now you own it for only $7? I don't know if I would be able to resist that.. LOL

edit- because, I hate it when someone has a domain you want, and they aren't doing anything with it, but won't sell. Ok, I can understand if they have future plans to develop it or whatever, but it still sucks..

Yeah, I did! That was the easy part...Karma... The hard part was following somebody's advice (from this board) which was to keep the queries to next to nothing so that it seemed like nobody was interested while still keeping close track of every expiration date, etc. Patience is a virtue!
