Probably was too excited to launch. Common marketing mistake.
The $1 is for first year only, and obviously doesn't come with Who-Is privacy.

Their pricing is strange.
1 year - $1
Renewal - $15.00/1yr
2 years - $23.6
Their pricing is roughly $12/year and they made renewals a bit high. They could've made 2 years price at $16 to make it look legit.

Make sure you read the transfer terms. Many companies don't allow you to transfer within 1st year. It's good for throwaway domains or experimental projects

I think if you really need that - it worth to try them out. It seems the price allows to try that.

They must have got spammed by people purchasing the domains for churn and burn sites.
Explains the quick edit in pricing from 1$ to 8$ for a domain.
