I am a resident of the United States, and most of my traffic will probably come from the USA. If I cannot obtain a .com or .org for a domain name I want, and it's available as a .us, would I (by design) not rank as well in the SERPs, as if I would have had that .com or .org?

It will be fine with search engines but you will lose type-in traffic as many people would end up typing .com instead of any other extension.

It will rank fine in the states. If the traffic you want is in the US and you can't get .com, .org or .net then go for .US and make sure you host it in the US as well.

I've been selling .US domains to US startups for over 3 years... (been domaining for 13 years) ... most of my US clients would rather have the .US domains over .Org.

Type in traffic is almost vanishing anyways! so I wouldn't worry getting the .US version without a doubt.

Yes, you can rank the .us's fairly well. They rank especially well with Local Searches. It's even better if it is an EMD and none of your competition has one ;).

This stuff can easily be found on Google

When a webmaster registers a domain name, they will be given the option to buy additional TLDs. In order to maximize the direct traffic to a domain, it is advised that webmasters should only buy a domain if the .com version is available. Additionally, it is not recommend that SEO conscious webmasters purchase low quality TLDs such as .biz, .info, .ws, .name, etc. as a means of increasing traffic.

When you buy a domain, you buy it for one of 3 reasons:

1- Build a Brand (Google , Yahoo, bla) and in that case, only .com is recommended .

2- Need to develop it and get traffic. ccTLDs would do as good as .com in the search engines in the targeted country.

3- Domain investor... You'll be buying all types of domains in all types of extensions just to re-sell them.

Thanks,
