Domain difference in SEO?

Hey! Im out shopping some domains and I am wondering about something.

Does this mean something?

Lets say I buy this domain:
free-websites.com or freewebsites.com is there any big difference in SEO for those? Does the - mean anything big? And the difference between .com and .net anything big?

I always heard that the "-" in the domain name should be avoided if possible.

But no I don't think there's too big of a difference between that or .com or .net. That being said I always try to get a .com if possible.
 
That is bad for me hehe. I need to pay a big amount of money for the domain without "-". But ill wait and see for some more answers.

No difference for the -, go ahead and get it.

Just make sure it's a .com .net or .org
 
Content and backlinks over rule the use of hyphens. Go ahead and register that bad buy! Also, use the BHW Search function, there have been some good threads on the topic.
 
So you say I should buy the one with "-" ?
 
Okey. But if I stick without the "-" and get it in .net instead of .com would that be as good as the domain with .com ending?
 
Only thing that MAY hurt you is that when a visitor arrives at your website-name.com site and they want to return to it (assuming they didn't bookmark it), they might just type in websitename.com (without the "-") and land on someone's other site and then you could lose out. But I do have a couple domains with the "-" so I say go for it if the domain is that desireable to you.
 
I see the point. But ill just skip the "-" and buy the domain with .net instead of .com
 
Always try to get the EXACT keyword phrase in your domain name (unless its really long)...go for non-hyphen,.com domains before hyphened,.net domains.

However, if you can ONLY get a .net domain with hyphens ...then go for it. A .net domain is still a TLD. If no .com or .net...then .org.
