Domain change

Hi to everyone,

I have the below problem and even I ve read a lot about this issue still can t decide what to do.
About 10 months ago I hired a web designer to build my site. We had a discussion and clearly informed him that I need a website to attract clients specifically from UK, as I do not target in local audience. The website (mistakely I think) was built on a ccTLD domain (.gr as my compamy based in Greece) and strongly believe that the problem on this is the ccTLD as it takes very good rankings for many keywords around Greece but not good abroad. Back then, I hadn t any knowledge about ccTLDs or gTLDs or international SEO. All this time I was educating myself in order to help my website grow faster and ended that ccTLD is a crucial problem.
The question is what should I do now in order to achieve better rankings abroad?
Leave it like it is and work harder to have better rankings abroad?
To use hreflangs or subdirectories on the current ccTLD?
Change domain to a gTLD and use hreflangs or subdirectories?

For local searches the .gr domain will make some difference, especially because European domains are often verified user ID, which is a plus for what Google calls EAT (which is basically them choosing who ranks according to their ID / nation / etc).

For non-local, general searches the domain doesn't make any difference.

So, if I understand well, if a Brittish request a local search about a product in Greece example.gr is better than example.com?

You need to change domain to .uk or .co.uk or .com/net etc and use hreflangs.
Also in Google International Targeting Report choose UK.

I believe this option is the best for me. only thing stops me is the loss of the current backlinks

You can do 301 old domain, and Website move in GSC.
