Domain and Hosting

So I just found out the hard way that you have to wait 60 days to transfer a domain from one service to the next. It seems everyone here always recommends buying a domain from one place (e.g. namecheap/godaddy) and hosting from another (e.g. hostgator), but no one mentions the ICANN policy of waiting 60 days to transfer it?

Now the domain I bought it useless since i can't use it with my hosting (hostgator) until the 60 day wait it up, AND I have to buy another, more expensive not as good domain because I need to start this project ASAP.

Question: Why do people recommend hostgator so much when their domains are $12.50 each and whois protection is $10, when you can get the same domain+protection elsewhere for a fraction of the price. Is their hosting really that good to offset these costs?

Hostgator is for hosting content. They do offer a domain service but it is insanely expensive. You can have different registrars and different hosting. I use hostgator for server space and namecheap for domains. You just edit the DNS settings to point to the right name servers. POOF fixed.

You should be able to use domain with any host.

Update your nameservers from your host to your domain and allow a few hours.

What is your exact question mate? Are you blaming anyone? Or asking some help from us?

So are you saying that you DON'T need to wait the 60 days to use a domain with a different hosting service? Everywhere I checked says yo do. Plus, I tried updating the nameservers and waiting a couple days and it still didn't work. That's when I found out about the ICANN waiting rule to transfer a domain.

Why do you have to transfer your domain?
Just update the DNS settings in your domain CP to point to your hosting account and you should be good to go...

There's no need (or reason) to transfer a domain to use it with your hosting plan - you're just fucking something up with your settings, and that's why it's not working. You only need to point your nameservers to the one's that HostGator has provided you with, and if you only have one domain, it should already be configured correctly in the purchase phase of your hosting plan.

I bet my balls that what you've read is either completely incorrect, or you haven't understood it. Or you've read about transfers, which are completely unrelated to this matter. Guess it was the latter.

You don't need to transfer domain to the hostingprovider where you gonna host your website. Just change the nameserver of your domain.
