*Domain and branding mismatch* (sorry banged this out on my phone and typo'd the topic)

I have a client who brought me a site with some pre-existing SEO, not too bad but their brand and domain do not match... Its local search stuff so this looks lie a red flag to me. The domain is 3 years old PR3.

Turns out its a bit of a front/tiny business (they made this site for sole local SEO purposes) so changing the business name is doable but will obviously take more work to fix all citations and I imagine some existing branding anchors will be wrong.

Other more easier fix is domain name change, but same problem as they have naked URL anchors which will be off. I'm thinking this is the better solution since changing domains is easier and we can do a press release about it but I've never been in this situation yet so looking for some advice. Any suggestions?

You can always do a domain redirect, so register a new URL, and then do a redirect, so when visitors go to your website that you have bought the link will redirect to your new site, that way you would still get relatively the same traffic and you do not have to change the whole site, content etc.

This is what I was thinking, get a new domain with proper business name and 301 every URL.

name change and press release is a great idea. Got to think like a company board rather than a seo company - eg - when a new board CEO comes in they come with their own ideas, and hence a name change is not uncommon ( even some large insurance companies and even companies like Starbucks they moved from words to a symble ) so it is not uncommon in the world of business.

First i would look at finding the best business name as this can have a major impact on your businesses success.

I think a combination of both, change the name of the biz but keep the old domain name and 301 it until u see no further traffic from it
