Does your fanbox on your website help in SEO?

I never understood how google can find facebook likes.

Example.

you have a website with a like box to like your FAN PAGE, not your site. So if you have a 1000 likes, how will google know that is your website they are liking.

Is it smarted to make people like the website url, isntead of the fan page?

How will google know people share your website, when they are not friends with those people and cant crawl the profile.

Someone please clarify how to make social signals so that google can see it. The reason I ask b/c I saw in another thread social signals are very important.

There is only CORRELATION between social media signals and rankings. Yet there has been no proven CAUSATION.

Also, when it comes to Facebook think about it - FB is one of the Google's biggest competitors so why would Google reward you for interacting with it's competition? Hell no, it won't... The only social media to focus on because of rankings is G+ (and probably Twitter, StumbleUpon, Digg and similar social/bookmarking sites).

Facebook can only bring you good traffic, if you know how to do it...

The way I understand it is social signals are just backlinks. Share or retweet a direct link to your site, and Google will notice. I don't know about SERP improvements from likes though, I don't see how Google would be able to put 2 and 2 together in such a case, as no direct link is being shared.

Imho, the likebox gives your visitors a sense of your company or brand being popular.

If you are interested in sharing content from your site and getting more exposure, the like box is a great addition. Its also good for personalizing content on the site (for visitors logged into facebook who visit).

As mentioned by the other members, there is really no direct proof (and even adamant denial from Google) that social signals play a role in ranking web pages. If you can get your content shared a lot though, that's usually an indication that you are headed in the right direction to getting more people to link to it.
