Have a friend who optimises websites using his own plugin because he says Wp rocket and similar plugins rarely work, thoughts?

Ofc it works. Im using cracked wp rocket plugin and it does great job. Test it with good settings gtmetrix and without it..

Of course it works, it´s one of the best all-in-one performance optimization plugins on the market.

But, I rather use Perfmatters (PAID) with Litespeed (FREE) or, if you want another (and better) all-in-one solution, I would check FlyingPress.

Do you both achieve a 90+ score consistently, would be interested to know: before and after installing these.

Some people just think different.
They think every mass-appeal WP plugin adds weight to the overall system resources.
After all, a plugin doesn't do anything you can't do yourself manually the hard way (or write your own plugin that has 95% less bloat).
It's like saying why buy a $850,000 excavator? My shovel can do it. Or make my own shovel lol.
Some people are just technical masochists and like doing things a different way.
You can verify if the plugin works by running gt-metrix and similar tools before/after optimization.
I've been using gt-metrix a lot lately and discarding the first test. The 2nd and 3rd result never match the 1st run.

WP rocket does the required job by creating and serving cached versions of your pages,
It's not totally perfect when it comes to reducing js & CSS used tho,

Choosing the right theme and excluding the unused files/lines manually depending on your use would make it even lighter,

You can use it along a CDN, image optimization plugin and some plugin like Perfmatters to make a perfect combo and get an insane loading speed

Each one of them is just a piece of the puzzle and they all work together to get the best possible results,

Keep in mind that you'll need a good hosting no matter how your website is optimized to serve each page as fast as possible

Wp rocket works fine but they can't optimize your CSS or HTML. That's why you may be falling on Core web vital issue. I am using Perfmatters it works well read my CSS and HTML language as well. And recently I am passed the web vital issue. If you want good ranking you must run with advanced features.

I've been using WP Rocket on all my network for over 1+ year now, was some small issue with this plugin, but I never had a big issue with them, which is helping the blogs to be much faster loading.

Another option is; Wordpress + Open Litespeed + LScache (no caching) + GeneratePress + Cloudflare

Don't waste time, best combo is: openlitespeed+perfmatters+cloudflare.
