When I make a single post site on wordpress, it goes on the home page. Then wordpress automatically makes an identical page in the posts section. I can't seem to get rid of the identical post. Does this cause a duplicate content penalty?

Set your homepage and archive pages to show only post excerpt. That way your homepage will display only couple of sentence from your post with Readmore link to the post which contains the full article.

If your theme doesn't support excerpt use the < !--more--> tag after the first couple of sentences in your post.

What neo said. Unless you configure WP properly, it's full of pitfalls. Don't let it ping every freaking website with every post, that is a 10 year old technique that is no longer useful. Also make sure your plugins are few and only the essential. I've had hackers ruin 100 wordpress installations of mine because one single blog had a dirty plugin which allowed the hackers in.

I don't think in this case wordpress can cause the duplicate content penalty because when you publish post in wordpress then post shows in two places first in the home page and in the selected category.
