Does website speed really matter after a certain point?

You obviously need a website to be as fast as possible, but once you are established and have a service and/or product that people will continue to buy from will focusing on an extra 100ms of speed really help?
 
Based on your website, for example, if you run a successful e-commerce application and speed is not a significant factor, you need consider this aspect otherwise your visitor counter will be deducted.

The same goes for the other categories applications.
 
No, if your speed is very slow it will be a trouble but if your website has normal speed as the market 100ms doesn’t change anything. I don’t think you have to focus on speed as priority

maybe its more important if you have clients from all over the world. third world folks have shitty internet; what 100ms extra for you may be a lot more for them.
barring that what if, i would tend to agree with you that returns diminish after a certain point.
 
if your site is within the normal range, a little slower than average, it is not a problem

it will always be a problem when it is taking too long and the pages are too heavy...extreme and rare things to find
 
I was just wondering because there are still articles talking about Amazon's study from 2009 where 100ms decrease in speed meant a 1% loss in sales. I use Amazon, since its so convient and I can get good deals on products and have them usually in 2 days, so a little slow down doesn't really turn me off. If the site was almost down, I might just delay the purchase until later in the day or the next day.
 
in my opinion, no.. i have seen lot of website doing best with worst speeding score, but matters is page score, you should have load your pages faster than your homepage. because page ranks in google, not homepages

For brands like Amazon, if the speed really doesn't frustrate you, you are not gonna switch to another e-com site. Same with many big brand sites, if they are on average speed load it doesn't matter too much for the user or even search engines.
 
Its okay to have a not that fast website, no harm to SEO, but from revenue perspective, you may want a very fast and quickly loaded websites, thus potential more revenues.
 
If it's already as fast as possible shaving 100ms might not even be worth all the fuss. I've seen top ranking sites with average to poor site speed and they still rank above everyone else.
 
Why wait for the moment when you can start with all the parameters needed
 
After 1sec load time, or perhaps 2secs, there's a huge threshold of diminishing returns.
Some people make a big deal out of it, and that's probably because they are selling a related service.
Don't waste your time. :o

As long as your 75th percentile LCP times is less than 2.5-3 seconds, any improvement in your pageload will only bring small diminishing returns.

And a 100ms improvement on your server's end may appear small, but when you factor in the time it takes to transport that response back to your user, that will result anywhere from 500ms to half or more than a second improvement for your user depending on their internet connection.

An average Web server has a response time of 200ms. At the same time, a response time like this generates a LCP (largest contentful paint) of about 2.5 seconds.

This means that if your site responds to a new http request within 200ms , your user would see most of your site loaded on their browser within 2.5seconds.

Now imagine how big of a difference would that make if instead of 200ms , your server responds in 350ms or 500ms, the p75 LCP in that case could be huge. Optimizing a response time like that even by 100ms would improve LCP scores by a lot.

This is why response time is usually a poor metric when users come into play. Your users don't see your servers response time. They see your Page's first Contentful Paint (FCP) and Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) times.

We run an ecommerce website but our issues lay on around 2000ms of more loading time than what we wish to have.
In our case that would help a lot. But if we only had 100ms delay, we would not care.
I am trying to say that if its just around 100ms of added delay for an ecommerce website that would not mean any difference, but if it was over 1 second, I would try my best to solve it as it makes difference in user experience too.

On the other hand if it is easy to solve, I would solve it!
You can easily cut 100ms just by resizing product images to lower jpeg size even if they are already well cut down.
Convert any possible png to jpeg.
 
It could give your site a competitive advantage over other sites with similar metrics.
 
It will always matter at any point. If the site speed is slow, it is very bad impression for Google
