I haven't been in automated link building for years now and i want to return a little

So does using link shortener still gets you banned/penalized in google search?

Such as bit.ly

Also do you suggest spamming your website's official twitter and facebook addresses? Do they also get penalized?

did it ever?! i am using url shortners as a mix for my money site and also some of my tier 1s. Have not had any issues with getting top ranking. @Ozzyzig even had a case study showing benefits of using url shortners. you just need to use them correctly across your tiers.

I've never had the experience of these shorteners resulting in a domain getting slapped, however, I used them for parasites and part of my tiered links.

I never heard about issues using URL shorteners. Anyway, I prefer to use a custom URL shortener instead of bit.ly or any other external service.

"yourls" is an handy choice. It's easy to install and it allows full control regarding your short URLs.
