I have an even better strategy and it works like a charm!
First, find or buy a high RD and spam-free deleted web 2.0 account. Then host this blog on your own domain, in our case, that must be a PBN domain.
When you use your own domain, Tumblr, Weebly or Blogger will 301 redirect the subdomain (xxx.tumblr.com) to your custom domain name.
Now, you're free to spam the subdomain however you want.
PBN domain < 301 < deleted high PA web2.0 account < GSA blast
PS; Don't forget to use longtail and LSI keywords as anchor in your blast.

It's bad indeed... So are you sure that it is not a google dance happening before gaining positions?

Yeah might be. I will be updating the progress on a biweekly process.
The problem with a GSA blast (I brought from fiverr) is that most of the anchor text will gonna be from chinese forums with "[主页]".
I have suspect the lack of anchor text of the targeted keyword might be affecting it, so my next experiment is gonna be a GSA blast with a good GSA list.

I just read your strategy for redirecting subdomains of Tumblr to custom domains and I am testing this out.
However I've setup the custom domain in Tumblr and it's loading the "There's nothing here" screen so it seems to be setup correctly, but the problem is that the subdomain (xxx.tumblr.com) of Tumblr is not redirecting to it. Do I need to change something manually for this to happen?
