Does updating old content still work?

Refreshing outdated info, adding useful details and re-submitting via GSC can trigger faster reindexing and sometimes boost rankings more than a brand-new page.
I usually do both, but prioritize updating existing content that already has backlinks or traffic.

Yeah, I still update old content regularly. If a page already has rankings impressions backlinks or some history, I’d rather improve what’s there than start from zero. I usually check the queries it’s getting, refresh outdated sections and fill obvious content gaps before deciding it needs a new page.

I have just landed here while researching on google wether this works or not. Going to start doing it to a 8 year old website with 200 pages and has lost significant rankings. So fingers are crossed. I plan to update minimum 3 content per day but highly researched. Ofcourse I am taking pointers from gpt and claude.

better results updating older pages than creating new ones from scratch.improving a page that already has some authority can much more effective than starting over with a new page

It works quite well. Update your old content and refresh it with new information. You should also optimize the structure of your articles to make them more AI-search-friendly.

Do you regularly update old articles or mainly focus on publishing new content? i have noticed that improving outdated information and adding usefull details can sometimes be more effective than creating an another new page.
What has been your experience with this?
Yes, definitely. Updating old content can often bring better results than publishing another new page, especially when the existing page already has some authority.
