Does updating old content make it fresh?

I know Google values sites that continue to produce fresh content, and the most straightforward way would be to just have new posts/articles to publish. But what about editing your old posts and either adding in some content or moving things around, etc? Does Google see that the page has been updated and treat it as fresh?

Google likes fresh stuff. Updating some of the old posts will most probably make Google crawl most of your pages again to reflect the changes. Since the post is older, so is the URL of the post. For this reason the page has already some value in the eyes of G and updating it will add more value. Be careful when you add content and change things, not to underoptimize the page for the initial keyword you targeted. There is a large debate how the updated pages are seen by G but it surely helps when you update the content. You show G that you care about the topic in the post and want to give the users the latest info on the topic. Also, try to get some backlinks after updating the post. This will add more value to the post.
 
Updating will definitely score brownie points with Google. The problem most guys will face however is new content for the update. This can be solved buy getting the new free content generator from Spinblitz
 
I have a WP blog, what I do is just randomly write a comment onto old pages. I also post one new page per day.

(on the side of my blog I have the new posts, and new comments widgets that update)
 
First and foremost - Is your content relevant? Is it relevant to your linking structure? To your Authority Sites? You can change it, add to it - what value does it bring?

Use the "Search" Bar located in the upper left. You'll find all your answers there.
 
What do you mean by "uptading old content"? Editing the post or making a new one regarding the old content?
 
With all respect, TFGreen, that wasn't really my question, but since you brought it up, I'll bite. While I obviously won't discuss my keywords directly, the overarching niche is health, and I am operating in an area of expertise for me. I produce all of the content myself and have the ability (thanks to my background) to make content that is roughly on par with any of the authority sites in my niche. My concern is not the nature of the content itself, but rather how to get it in front of some eyeballs.

At BHW, we're all in the business of playing the Google algorithm to our advantage, are we not? When I search for an answer about fresh content, all I ever seem to find is a bunch of BSTs. In fact, if I search now, this very thread comes up near the top of results. I appreciate the answers that I've gotten thus far, and hopefully more people can chime in as well.

I mean editing the post. For example, if I had a post counting down the top 10 of XYZ or something, and added a new member of the list (counting up to 10) every couple days or something. Or perhaps a few months down the line, new information comes out that causes me to update an old post. That sort of thing.

Well buddy, I'd say how about trying it? Edit an old post and see what happens?

Actually, I already am. But given that my site is new and my sample size would be small, it's hard to generate any reasonable conclusions. I figure the approach doesn't hurt, unless Google was only assessing the page for relevancy/authority the first time around and not giving it any more credit for the newer updates.
 
It works. If google already indexed the page and you add new content to a post that is ongoing that will build authority for that post. If you're using wordpress make sure it pings when you update to let search engines know they need to come back.

Ah, perfect. Yes I have a reasonably sizable ping list plugged into wordpress, so I'm hoping that should do the trick. Good to know this is a successful strategy.
